In the last several years, there has been increasing clinical recognition of the . importance and variety of "Sick Sinus Syndrome" (SSS).
The term "Sick Sinus Syndrome" has been used to describe numerous rhythm disturbances secondary to the failure of the sinus node to function properly, thus producing a variety of neurologic and cardiac symptoms.
This paper summarizes five cases of sick sinus syndrome hospitalized at Presbyterian Medical Center in Jeon Ju from Jan., 1975 to Dec., 1977.
The detection of this disease symptom complex depended upon a high degree of clinical suspicion, electrocardiographic olservation, and "provocative tests" by pharmacologic agents, ¢¥such as, , afropine sulfate, or the use of atrial pacing to challenge the sinoatrial node by overdrive and then measuring the sinoatrial node recovery time. A permanent pacemaker¢¥ was implanted subcutaneously. under left anterior chest wall, in three cases of the five cases of sick sinus synderome, who had suffered serious cardiac symptoms even though there was no neurologic manifestations including syncope.
After the implantation of the pacemaker, clinical, symptoms markedly improved.
